Fluted and slat wall panels look alike in photos. They are built in different ways. That difference changes price, sound control, cleaning, and where each one fits.
I review panel projects for a living. The most common mistake I see is ordering by name alone. One buyer ordered “slat” panels for a TV wall. The boards that arrived were shallow fluted panels with 3 mm grooves. The deep shadow effect was gone, and the wall had to be redone. A sample and a section drawing would have caught it.

The main difference is simple. Fluted panels have one continuous face. Slat panels use separate strips with gaps between them.
Fluted panels have grooves or ribs across one connected surface. The grooves are usually shallow, often 2 to 8 mm deep. The profile can be rounded, square, narrow, or wide. Makers use solid wood, veneer MDF, WPC, or polymer. A continuous face suits feature walls, cabinets, islands, and reception desks.
Slat panels use separate strips fixed at set spacing. The strips sit on MDF, plywood, or acoustic felt. They often stand 15 to 30 mm above the backing. This creates deep shadow lines. Felt-backed versions also absorb sound.

The look comes from depth. Slat strips stand above the backing. Light hits the strip face, and the gap stays dark. This makes strong shadow lines. Wider gaps and a dark backing raise the contrast.
Fluted grooves stay part of one face. The eye reads the wall as a single textured plane. Rounded grooves give soft highlights. Square grooves give sharper lines.
Spacing controls density. Narrow spacing adds more lines to the same wall. Vertical lines draw the eye up. They do not change the real ceiling height. Test the spacing with tape before you install. Check it from the door and from your seat.
Yes, when they are tested and built for it. Felt-backed slat panels expose soft material between the strips. Sound passes through the gaps and reaches that felt. Many report NRC values around 0.5 to 0.9 when tested to ISO 354. Always confirm the number for the exact assembly you buy.
Plain fluted panels are decorative. They rarely carry a real absorption rating. Grooves alone do not absorb sound. Some fluted products add an acoustic layer. Judge those as a full system, not by the surface.
Absorption is not soundproofing. Absorption cuts echo inside a room. Soundproofing stops sound passing through a wall. An acoustic feature wall reduces echo. It will not block noise between rooms. For that, you need a proper isolating wall.
Do not copy test results between products. Different spacing, felt, or mounting changes the result.

Cleaning is simple for both. Wipe fluted grooves. Vacuum slat gaps with a brush head. Do not soak felt unless the maker allows it. Some slat systems let you replace one strip. Large fluted sheets may need full replacement.
Cost has no fixed rule. Felt-backed acoustic assemblies usually cost more than plain profiles. Wall prep, cuts, trims, and freight also change the total. Compare installed quotes for the same wall area, not just the panel price.
